Marche is a particular region, distinguished by plurality, not only in its name (in fact Marche is plural for Marca, the only Italian region with a plural name!) but also in its landscape: the region covers the Apennine mountains and the coasts on the Adriatic Sea.
It is composed of 5 provinces, this region is heterogeneous also in the local ways of speaking and dialects, which may vary considerably according to the place you are. When you buy one of the farmhouses in the region Marche in the province of Pesaro Urbino means that you will get quietness, marvelous natural landscapes, and sea, mountains, hills and city altogether.
Even if the largest city is Ancona with its 100 thousand inhabitants, every city, town and small village shares their own magic and cultural heritage, thanks to many important artists who were born in those places. How should you choose which one of the 5 provinces to stay? In this post, we show you the Northern Province: Pesaro Urbino.
Once named only Pesaro, the province of Pesaro Urbino is the one that has always requested autonomy, because of the deed differences in history and traditions (that you can understand also in the way of speaking) compared to other provinces in the region. The province identifies itself with the historical importance of Dukedom of Urbino, arts and culture are fundaments in those places: from the University Urbino, with branch seats in Fano and Pesaro, to the music conservatory of Pesaro, birthplace of world famous Gioacchino Rossini. The birthplace of Raphael is Urbino, UNESCO World Heritage site.
Two of the three largest cities in the region Marche are located in this Province – Pesaro and Fano, second and third largest city, after Ancona. The backcountry landscapes remain untouched and wonderful since woods cover 50% of the area. This province offers many natural beauties: from Gola del Furlo (River Furlo Gorges) up to the magnificent Catria mountains, and the stunning rivers.
In relation to local food, mushrooms and truffles (such as the precious white truffles of Acqualagna) have fertile ground and the culinary traditions of the province are deeply influenced by those products. The Crescia of the surroundings of Urbino (a flat baked bread product), the Piadina of Urbino (thin flatbread) are typical local food, as well as the Brodetto alla Fanese (typical fish soup) and handmade egg-pasta, such as Cappelletti and Crestajat.
The area is also famous for producing excellent wine such as the white wine Bianchello del Metauro and the red wine Sangiovese. Extra virgin olive oil is also produced in the province thanks to the mild climate by the sea in the coastal areas; it is produced and mainly sold locally, a unique food delicacy. In the province the drink named Moretta was created, coffee with a splash of spirit Moretta, the typical drink that fishermen used to (and still do!) drink to warm after fishing; the recipe of the drink is actually a secret and it is special, there are several specialties.
In this province, there are numerous town festivals, street markets, and historical reconstructions, always accompanied by excellent street food, but also larger cultural events with national and international importance: we lack for nothing. Seaside areas have blue flag certifications for their environmental and water quality.
Pesaro Urbino is one of the most particular province of the region Marche, certainly the most uncommon, though it offers a large number of beauties and attractions, suitable for families, in order to relax and enjoy stunning places, without getting bored.
