September in the Marche region, in the province of Pesaro Urbino, is always a special month: the sky is still a beautiful azure blue but the heat gives way to cooling breezes, the days get a bit shorter, ending with wonderful crimson sunsets.
Pesaro and Urbino
The sea will certainly still be inviting, but you really shouldn’t dismiss spending time in the hills or mountains, in the open air, among fields of flowers and orchards, or perhaps visiting one of the many enchanting villages.
Despite the postponement of many major events due to the delicate health situation, there are still plenty of opportunities to get together and socialise throughout the month, all over the region: music festivals, culinary experiences, exhibitions and much, much more. In this column we’ll explore some ideas on what to do province-by-province, starting today with Pesaro and Urbino.
In Pesaro and Urbino, Between Art and History
After the summer break and the heat of August, September sees everything coming to life again, and that means art exhibitions. That said, don’t forget that Urbino, the city of Raphael, is practically already a splendid open-air exhibition, and undoubtedly deserves a visit. What better time than in September with its freshness and a sun that still gently warms you without being too strong? The Albornoz Fortress, the Doge’s Palace, the Duomo, Raphael’s house itself … the power to surprise, around each and every corner.
What’s more, the end of July sees the majestic Palazzo Ducale in Urbino hosting an exhibition of Perugino’s work – the great Master of Raphael – and is simply unmissable. A further curiosity: did you know that Urbino boasts a truly ancient university, the Carlo Bo, founded in 1506 and still renowned for its excellence today? So, there’s not only art and history, in September young people flood back to the city and vibrant nightlife rules once again!
The Culinary Event In The Province
BrodettoFest: the town of Fano is transformed, from the 10th to the 12th of September, where every restaurant offers you its take on the delicious fish soup, a speciality of Fano cuisine. Now in its nineteenth edition, the Brodetto Festival is an ambassador for Italian seafood tradition, both nationally and internationally.
On these specific days you can sample not just brodetto in all the participating restaurants – each of which prepares its own version following the traditional recipe, with a pinch of individuality and innovative interpretation – but also attend cooking demonstrations with famous chefs, food-themed talk shows and educational workshops for children. With a vast programme of events, you’re going to be spoiled for choice!
Immerse Yourself In Nature In The Province Of Pesaro Urbino
If, on the other hand, you intend taking advantage of the splendid days that September still offers with a walk in the countryside, surrounding yourself with a unique and almost wild landscape, verdant green and maritime blue at the same time, then Fiorenzula di Focara, on the border with Emilia-Romagna, is very much the perfect choice. It’s a wonderful medieval village overlooking the sea, in the heart of San Bartolo. What will you find there? A stunning public beach, peace and quiet and endless natural beauty.
The Marche is beautiful all year round and always has something to offer: living in this varied, vibrant and multifaceted region, still largely unspoiled, is truly a privilege. Don’t miss the next edition of the Marche Column in September, where we’ll be discovering all the things to do in the Province of Ancona!
