Historical Background

The villa was originally built during the 18th century as a hunting lodge for a noble family. As the family’s prestige grew, the building was progressively enlarged and transformed into an elegant country residence where the family spent extended periods away from the city.

Originally from Lombardy, the owners became members of the Jesi aristocracy during the 18th century, when the city was governed through an oligarchic system led by its principal noble families. Every three months, one family would appoint the Podestà, the chief magistrate responsible for governing the city and administering the twenty-four castles and fortified villages of the surrounding territory, from which the taxes supporting the Royal City of Jesi were collected.

The villa is an outstanding example of mature Neoclassical architecture in the Marche region, developed during the era of great architects such as Luigi Vanvitelli and Andrea Vici, the latter a native of this area and the author of several important buildings throughout the region. According to tradition, Andrea Vici, who maintained a close friendship with Felice Giani, was likely responsible for introducing the renowned artist to the Honorati family residence.

The frescoes decorating the principal floor are among the estate’s most valuable artistic features. Felice Giani, an artist of European renown, worked for some of the most prestigious courts of his time and also decorated the interiors of the Château de Malmaison near Paris, the residence of Joséphine Bonaparte. A member of Rome’s Accademia di San Luca, he received numerous artistic honours and distinguished himself in the celebrated competition of the Academy of Parma, in which the young Francisco Goya also took part.
