He was also considered one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th century, alongside Morandi and Viviani. He was among the artists consistently featured at the Venice Biennale uninterrupted from 1928 to 1962, almost until his death.

Although he considered the Marche region a true Eden, he decided early in his career to move to Rome, where he had a remarkable career as a prominent painter, printmaker, and writer.
