CORINALDO
This small hilltop town, at an elevation of about 200 metres, lies in the hinterland of Senigallia in the province of Ancona and is part of the association of Italy’s most beautiful villages. This status is fully deserved, as the town boasts a perfectly preserved medieval historic centre and is surrounded by 14th-century walls, also in excellent condition.
Its history, which probably dates back to the Early Middle Ages, is marked by a succession of wars, sieges and power struggles, but also, especially around the 17th century, by periods of social and economic prosperity and by remarkable artistic and cultural development. Over the centuries, the noble families involved in its history included the Malatesta, the Sforza and the Della Rovere.
Churches, noble palaces, arcades, towers and many other sights delight both the eye and the spirit of visitors as they wander through the narrow streets of this splendid historic centre. Also worth mentioning are the municipal theatre “Carlo Goldoni”, the museums and the art gallery, which houses religious paintings and reliquaries.
In the heart of the village, halfway up a long staircase, visitors can also admire the so-called “Pozzo della Polenta”, built in the second half of the 15th century to supply the local population.
Among the buildings of note is the birthplace of Saint Maria Goretti: a plaque on this modest building reminds us of young Maria, now venerated as a saint and martyr, and of her murder following an attempted sexual assault. Maria Goretti was canonised by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
Events, food fairs, medieval festivals and other local celebrations bring life and colour to Corinaldo for residents and visitors alike. Among the most distinctive are the Festival of Fools and the Polenta Well Contest (legend has it that the people of Corinaldo are a little eccentric and very fond of polenta!).
Corinaldo and the surrounding area offer visitors a wide choice of traditional restaurants and trattorias, B&Bs, holiday homes and agritourism accommodation.
For those wishing to explore the surrounding area, there is plenty to discover: the countryside is dotted with beautiful villas set in lovely gardens; Senigallia and its beaches are about 20 km away; Ancona, the regional capital, is about 50 km away, as is Urbino, which is certainly well worth a visit.
